Default Homepage or site wide links?

Link building is very important tool to get some good PR. Now a days everything is getting more complicated. I have heard that we should have site wide links rather than all homepage links. Does someone has some thoughts on this?

Well I have heard the opposite. Yes, it seems that people are saying site wide links are no good anymore. More and more people are looking for one page links.

I understand the reasoning behind this is the idea that site wide links are spam. Thus, search engines are not attributing the value of the link.

the best links are in the content itself, better to have a couple of links on a few pages that are highly related, then just in the footer all over the place

I had this same problem before. I was tasked to submit deep pages to directories one time and at the end of that day I can only find 1 out of ten directory that allowed me to submit several deep pages from our site.

Relying on site wide links could easily hurt a competitor's rankings by linking to their home page with a few large site wide links from large sites. This would destroy their deep link ratio, plus this could also destroy the percentage of unique backlinks. To make sure that they don't gain benefits in Yahoo or MSN, simply use irrelevant anchor text in the links.

If I had a choice between links from 500 pages from 1 site or 250 links from 250 different sites, I'd rather go with the latter.

same here, Yahoo counts all links, but Google sets limits, better to have a few good one's then tons crappy one's from the same site.

(by the way ... I have a list of 750 dirs that allow deep-links )

Site wide (run of site) links are links on every page of a website.
