Default developping single domain name or multiple

A couple years ago, I reg'd a one word domain name. It is informational and educational in nature so it can be used for any topic or niche imaginable.

I am wondering what others think about developping this name. Specifically, I have been writing articles myself and paying writers to write me articles for hundreds of niches.

I have built websites for those niches and each design is different according to the niche so they are mini websites with domain names off the main one word domain.

My question is this:

Should I put a directory or index of sorts on the home page letting people know what the site is about and that each link is to a different topic

OR

Should I forget about a home page on the root domain and let people find the mini sites naturally as they are looking for that particular topic?

I suggest you develop into a portal like website. From your domain name, I also suggest you create sub domain names where you will port contents related to your sub domain names.

It is not a difficult task to develop sites so I shall suggest that yo should work on different sites for every single niche. It is more easy to manage and those different sites can generate a good profit too.

I was thinking along these lines as well. I figured if each site is a mini site, it is easier to work on because you do not have to worry about the other pieces from the other sites.

I also felt that people would take the individual sites seriously where if I build a portal, they would think I am offering everything under the sun. And how can I be an expert at everything?

I was worried about the site looking like a catch-all.

Thx so much for both the ideas - I appreciate the feedback.
