SEO is very important... A site without SEO is like a step to failure. when you create a website expect that you will have a lot of competition, and the key to make your site stand out the competition is SEO.

SEO is very very important if want to promote your site. PPC is the other way to be in the top but it cost huge if compared to SEO. For a keyword's search volume PPC attracts only 20% where as a SEOed site attracts 80% clicks so SEO is a must.

I don't believe manual SEO is necessary, but definitely helps. If a site is really good, the visitors will do all the work for you and go out there and build links for you and send others. Those kinds of sites are far and few between though.

While it is true that you can buy traffic, good SEO is priceless. Good SEO doesn't have to constantly be updated, either.
