Do directories really help?

Hey,
I was wondering do placing your links in directories really help your rank in Google or is it made up so some people can make a bit of money out of directories?

This is what i think, i may be wrong

I use directories to get indexed easier and i believe if your in a directory its a backlink, and the more backlinks you have the better so i cant see it doing any harm.

But i only usually go for the free or recip directories. But the higher PR ones like yahoo etc you have to pay for which i would assume would give you a boost but i would rather buy links on related sites

Whoa! Definitely, Directory submission really helps in promoting your website. It is another way so that most search engines will indexed your site and aside from that it is a good source of backlinks that may brought your site to increase the PR.

I don't think so directories are the best way to get traffic as well as better SERP position. Directory can help you in SERP position buy it wont help to increase traffic.

Directories submission help, that's a sure thing. However, they are not supposed to be what they were in the past, look at Dmoz for example.

I don't think directories help a lot these days because it might help a little bit to gather backlinks but not overall in bringing traffic.

Yes and no, the reason why yes is because we are submitting to the right place or relevant sites and this means that we are getting link juice from it which can affect PR and SERP positively. and No because it doesn't help a lot in acquiring traffic.

That is why there are 2 link building methods: for human and for search engines.

Don't just rely on directory submission. Directories itself don't bring much traffic. Help with ranking? minimal but every link counts. So, combine this with other methods like article directory submission, social bookmarking, blog commenting, etc for ranking boost.

Directories will give you powerful backlink as well as link juice. They also help you to get indexed. I have tried this technique for my personal sites and found the results very quickly.

I always have some directory links, but only from either free directories or paid ones which I find in my competitors backlinks. If nothing else, the free ones keep your site relevant to a topic, and mix the links up in your BL strategy a bit, so makes them look much more natural.
