Well the effectiveness of bookmarking would ultimately depend on what type of site you are running, since not all are compatible and would bring much traffic to a site that's not worth being bookmarked.

bookmarks are effective, if they are done right !
The major problem with bookmarks is, that the url, where your backlink is placed often doesnot get indexed. If that is the case, it doesnot matter, if its dofollow or nofollow, it just doesnot help.

Forum posting and bookmarking is very effective link building technique. but the sites which has frequent updations and good traffic will give you good results in case of search engine ranking or traffic.

Bookmarking is effective but not as it once was. The one thing people fail to do when bookmarking is bookmarking promotional material. For example, if you write an article to promote your web content, you want to be sure to bookmark that as well.
