Avatar Advertising
How effective do you feel this is? I see it all the time on big forums and I wonder if it really works. Never tried it myself though, so any advice?

i think its quite effective method, but then again you need to have a lot of posts,
what i noticed is that the high ranking and famous sites are very often indexed making them very viable for advertising your site both in the avatar and the signature..

If I use an avatar I usually use the one Im using now though I have seen people advertise and sell their avatars at DP, I never thought it would work well for any of my sites as someone would have to type in the domain from the avatar but it would work well to keep your site on everyones minds if you bought alot of avatars.

Personally, i understand the idea behind selling the avatars, but i don't like it very much.
I take avatar forum as part of each person's forum-persona, and when you got an ad-avatar like 10 other people do on the same forums, it's a minus for me.

Well i can honestly say i have never followed a link in an avatar, but it must work as people sell there avatar for $$/month depending on how popular the forum is and how many posts you have.
At the end of the day what bad can it do

It's all ok, but to some people it's quite annoying. Yes, you can make a few bucks out of it per month, but for me it isnt worth it.
I mean, are you that desperate to get money ?

It's more to do with branding than anything I would imagin. If you keep seeing the same avatar time after time, then what's on the avatar starts to stick in your mind. Now if you need a site that is about web directories or something and that is what was on the avatar, then you may end up visiting that site mainly because you saw it in the avatars. The only reason you probably would have remembered that site is from seeing so many of the avatars with that site on it.

I don't think me as an advertiser would ever use it because avatars often cannot be linked. They would have to type the address that was displayed on the avatar by themselfs. It would also only work if you had alot of posts!

Very true, matter of fact i spend alot of time in digital point and the more frequent avatars are stuck in my head, so like you say i guess its just finding one that appealing to you.
Like if im looking for hosting and see "hosting $4.99/Month" i would most likly follow it to check it out.
Like i said before it does no harm so if your a regular user of a forum go for it, you never know.

The more exposures about your site the more it could be recalled. Avatar advertising could be effective if it is properly made. Note that it can be striking since it is image based.

I think that well designed avatars could work well - there are several ones that I see on DP that I have visited, especially the ones that I see very often in the same forum section, for example the directory or copyright section.

It can benefit you, but avatars are so small that you have to have something that is catchy or recognizable, like brand awareness.

Using an Avatar for marketing can be a decent ploy as far as branding goes, but I've seen far too many that are just plain tacky. Personally, I am more receptive to real people or at least what appear to be real people over those who choose to make their usernames the name of their website and their avatar a tacky snap of their web address.

I think it's helpful to promote your brand via avatar ads but I don't really think it will help drive too much traffic.

I share opinion with this one, after all, when u do business, u want to feel secure and the other is trustful!
But I like the idea of avatar!
