I use Twitter heavily and have around 4600 followers to date. I don't find it useful for generating direct website traffic. There is too much marketing going on Twitter for anyone to notice your tweets typically. The approach I am taking with Twitter is to constantly grow my following and therefore my Twitter page's PR. In about 7 months I have taken it from PR0 to PR5. Now when I backlink to my site I am gaining powerful links that are showing up in my GWT. I realize they are no follow links but I feel that they are still high valued links.

twitter is a powerfull tool, if you have many followers who have the same interests as yourself - it's a very quick and powerfull way to get relevant traffic. Find people who have same interests as yourself, and follow them - and they probably will follow you (autofollow), and after a while you might as well have several followers (if you provide relevant tweets to your network as well

In my experience you can drive traffic to a blog through Twitter, but getting people to a pay site is more challenging.

It has been incredibly successful for me in reaching out to potential suppliers and industry contacts. I haven't found it useful for finding customers directly as of yet.
