Here is a simple SEO tip for you
For all people who are just starting to learn how to promote their sites, do not try multiple methods at the same time or you might end up tired without any result...
Start with one or 2 method first and when you are about to master these methods and you used to do it, add another method in your arsenal...
In order...
First month
Do forum posting and blog commenting daily. Add useful blogs into your rss readers so that you can post comment when there are new posts.
Second month
while still doing the above methods, start to write and submit articles and links to directories...
Third month onwards...
Now that you are seeing the result of what you are doing, try other methods like social bookmarking, yahoo answer, twitter, etc... but make sure your 1st and second month activities are still going... You are just adding methods but not changing...
Do not try to do all of these on the first month if your time can't handle...
Most of all, spend 80% of your time in promotion and 20% in content...
hope this will stop you from posting questions like How to promote my site, how to get traffic, how to... seo.. etc, etc.. this is very simple but fruitful if followed correctly...

Yea, people are so pressed on just getting their site out there, without proper organization of their method(s) of promoting. Doing it with steps is a lot easier. Nice post.

I don't think this is a good way.
It is important to make all your backlinks natural by getting links from different places. I get backlinks from these few websites:
1. Web directories
2. Article directories
3. Dofollow blogs
4. Dofollow forums
5. Social bookmarking
6. Free blogs- wordpress, blogspot, squidoo, hubpages, etc.
I build backlinks from all these websites. Although I don't do much, I need all my backlinks to come from different places. If all your backlinks come from blogs or articles, it is very obvious to Google that you are trying to do something to manipulate results. They might put lower weight to your backlinks or penalize your website.
That's what I experienced in the past.

you could also try adding the keywords that interest you to your google alerts - get an email when something gets posted that you could comment on.

Specially, the newbie's think that doing all the methods at a time helps to increase their rank and traffic, but they don't realize that, the way they are going can cause spam and could be banned by google.
The best way is to stick to the SEO rules and follow the methods explained by members above.

As you said Very simple steps to follow. I would recommend spend 40% on content and 60% on marketing. If your content is good, useful & unique then it will make it easier to draw the visitors.
