Search engine optimization requires a lot of work to be fully realized. There are many aspects you have to change in your site or add as well to get search engine optimization.
These will include getting lots of information about the keyword phrases that are popular in regards to your sites niche or theme.

Yeah those are some important steps in starting up your website and marketing it. But it is necessary to continiuously market it and build links. For this you have to use different strategies which are quite tough.

You need to put most of your efforts into link building, not making content. With powerful, one-way links pointing to your site, you'll be successful!

My own take on this goes like this. Choose your niche, look up competitive and less competitive keywords in that niche (just by looking as the keywords you can probably mindmap related keywords on your own), look up articles in your chosen niche using those less competitive keywords, repurpose those articles so they become yours, stuff them in your site, build one way links through links in the author/ resource box of article directory-submitted articles (and by leaving comments on high PR sites, like this one).

It's not enough to choose the less competitive keywords, you also have to produce articles that incorporate those words naturally, It's so obvious when an article is designed around keywords - they read like, well, SEO writing.

I suppose we try to produce quality content to entice audiences to take some kind of action (click on a link, download an ebook, etc.). A good article copied word for word might do the trick. But since search engines don't like duplicate content, rewrites come into play. Besides, we're writing not to make search engines buy stuff, but to avoid penalties.

I've always approached the idea of balancing the keyword density with readability to be amusing. Imagine being stuck with keywords that are badly spelled and awkward to use, yet the writer has to find ways to make those stick.

Well, SEO puts the bread and butter on my table and I would take exception to some of what you indicated here.
While keyword traffic is important it has nothing to do with SEO.
You have overstated meta tags importance. What you do need is your keyword phrases in your page title, page description (effects click troughs but not rankings) and in your content.
If you also have the phrase in your url that is a big plus but will likely only benefit one page.
Fresh content is important I would agree but that is not always possible for many sites.
Finally, trading or exchanging links is a waste of time. You need one way links going your way.

Absolutely, I am sure. Page Rank has nothing to do with the amount of visitors that your site has. Try going to Google's Webmaster Central blog nd look it up for yourself.
Link exchanges are obsolete SEO practices. Yes, they are still talked about but a big waste of time. I actually know a thing or two about backlinks as my Tucson SEO Solutions website ranks both # 1 and # 2 in Google for backlinks building services.
The only way a link exchange works is if the page that you are linking to has a higher PR than your page. These things require monitoring to make sure the exchange is still valid... Just not worth it. I have never done one!

Yes and no shortcuts in the basic SEO steps. People sometimes commit the mistake of going it a bit hard and fast and that does not work and if does it does rather in the undesired way of putting a dubious reputation to the website the SEO person was working on.
Good for people to contribute their knowledge out here.

It amazes me that so much is written about SEO but so very few people suggest that you start the process by first learning from Google. I always recommend starting with their Webmaster Central blog... If you want to know about Google then go to Google...
