Social media and SEO go hand in hand. Both have their own advantages.
SEO is all about how you optimize your website organically to rank in SERPs. It tells us how users inculcate marketing strategies to make websites gain traffic and revenue.
Benefits of SEO

-Increase visibility of a website in search rankings
-Organic way of gaining traffic
-Provides maximum exposure to website
-Makes your site accessible to users
-Faster loading pages

Social media is all about exposing your website on social media channels (social networking websites, blogs, video distribution channels etc)
It helps you in building good social media reputation which is a prime factor for Google while ranking your website in search results.
Benefits of SMO
- Helps you in gaining a good social media reputation
- Exposes your content across a wide audience
- Helps you with quick indexing
- Brings you more traffic
- Gets you the benefit of backlinks (if do-follow)
