Which is more useful sitemap.html or sitemap.xml

There are basically two types of sitemaps
- One for the real users (visual representation of site structure with clickable links)
For real user you can use HTML sitemap generated either by Php or by asp etc. Sitemap.html is sitemap for human visitors.

- Another for the web crawlers(contains list of URLs for crawling). For crawlers sitemap is generated in XML format mostly supported by search engines.
Sitemap.xml is sitemap for search engines

HTML Sitemap is used by people find content on your site. You should have one to help people find what they are looking for. This can also be crawled by the search engines

XML Sitemap is designed for robots from Google and Yahoo, and Ask to cut down on their resources used to index the web. This file is usually generated by a program, so you need a program to make one. People do not use this to find the content that they are looking for.

You need both for your site.

both are important one for search engine and next one for user point of view.

but search engine optimization is only for xml sitemap to increasing indexing of more number of web pages.

As Tessa said, XML sitemap is useful for SE to crawl the website, & HTML for user's to have a clear navigation through the website.

Sitemap which we create for visitor is html while sitemap which we create for search engine bot is xml.
