yes, adsense is a way to monetize a blog. But it dose not work if you don't bring traffic to your blog.

So for a newbie blogger that wants to make money off of blogging (not as a hobby), would you create your own website or get a free blog? And also, if you want a free blog, which in your opinion, is the best service to go with?

Well..it really doesn't matter alot having a free blog Or your own domain blog
The only thing matter is what you have to share with other peoples ?
A interesting and useful article/post can bring lots of traffic and even returning visitors

You missed something there. The easiest way to get accepted into google adsense program is making a blog at "blogspot.com" which is of google itself and signing up on google adsense through that website. You will be surprised to get accepted way too fast and once accepted use the code on any website you want.

I did the same thing. I was rejected the first time and I took that help from someone over Digital Point Forums. He gave me this idea and it really worked. I got accepted within 4 days of signing up.

If you really considering to make money from blogging, then I suggest you to get your own domain name and hosting. Then download blog script, preferable wordpress.

Reason to get own domain and hosting is to avoid from being shut down by free blog providers when you are making tones of money.
If that ever happens, you will have to start form scratch. A waste of time and effort.

The free blog might be making money from google adsense or selling links? Free Blogs are just a way to start if you are not looking to have own domain and pay for hostings. Once you have cash, I dont see a reason to go for free blog providers rather own domain.

And traffic can be same as in free blogs or own domain. Just the difference of more seriousness and the power to do anything on own domain

Smile not only

It is not only adsense to monetize your blog, there are many alternatives to adsense like bidvertizer, widget bucks, chitika etc. Affiliate marketing is also a great source of income from blogs.
