Default Should all the webmaster sites have directories?

This is some thing that has been doing rounds in my head for a while, couple of webmaster forums I am a member of, have dedicated directories for their members and I feel it adds value to their forum since webmasters are always looking for directories to post our sites in.

What do you guys think, do you think such a directory which of course should be exclusively for its members, adds value to webmaster forums?

I don't think it would hurt, but you should only make it available to contributing members, after they have been a member for X amount of time and after X amount of posts. Otherwise you are going to get spammers that are just joining the forum with no intention of contributing just to get a link.

I agree. It is better if it can be treated as incentive. However, this can only be effective if the forum has a good traffic.

I am a member of AF and they have a directory for forums and it is open for all members, though some would register just to submit their sites, it is also likely they will stick around and post in the forums.

No i don't think all webmaster sites should have directories. Every site should be unique and if every webmaster site has a directory they would be all bland and not uniquely attractive.

It would hurt the site more than you think, each site shall have a unique content and if all sites would look the same (or think the same) the internet would be much worse place (compare it to people)

If this is the case then it would also imply one should not use out of the box scripts such as vb or phpbb. Directory is just a feature, like for instance avatars, signatures etc..

It is how a particular feature is implemented, content that gets put in to these empty databases which determine whether or not a forum/site/blog is unique or not.

i like webmaster sites with directories. i usually add my sites too.

moreover you could try to add topsites or such things.

it could help to increase traffic and pagerank.
