  • banner ads PPC or CPM?

When banner ads are displayed on most websites (ecommerce sites, internet forums, free email inboxes, etc.), are advertisers charged per click, or per impression (CPM)? What's the norm?

Now only very few affiliate networks provide good paid CPM ads, more provide CPS, CPA or PPC ads. You should check you niche's CPM then compare, and choose the most profitable one.

          Depends!

This really depends on the contract. It can be seen as either or, so it is important to identify which in your contract, because it may be more beneficial for you to do one over the other!

They are charged for displaying their banner for a fixed time. Like XYZ dollar for six months.

It depends of the contract between the network and the advertiser agent. Some ads are displayed only in cpm mode and others only in cpc mode.
In my opinion cpc is much better for the advertiser because he pays only if somebody clicks on his ad and visits his page.
When you use cpm network you may pay for each 1000 impressions of your ads even if nobody clicked your ads.

                      Hi kevin32,

Usually the norm is Cost Per Click (CPC) for an advertisement that is displayed, but a lot of advertising networks also follow the Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM) model or eCPM model (Effective Cost Per Mile – This takes into account the effective CPM & CPC rates).
