Yes, the Internet can be very confusing. So much contrary information and endless opinions!
I think the best way to building an Internet business is to think of something you, yourself, really like. Maybe a hobby or something you have a passion for. Then research that in terms of demand and find a angle for that topic that is in demand (search wise) and is not overly-competitive.
Example: Let's say you really love antique cars. It's a topic you really enjoy and wouldn't mind writing about it or talking about for a long time to come.
But let's say antique cars is a very saturated, competitive market. It wouldn't do much good to just create a site that will end up buried in all the other sites on the same topic.
However, you could narrow it down, perhaps put a spin on the topic like antique Chevrolet cars or how to make antique cars survive the winter or something. (I'm guessing to illustrate my point). The point is, find something within your passion band that is less competitive and is monetizable. Some kind of spin that has commercial value.
Example of commercial value: An art site can be spun to sell art supplies or ebooks on technique while you gain popularity to sell your latest painting.
At any rate. That's the best way to get started, in my opinion. Then once you've built the site up and are getting traffic, you begin monetizing. I started out with Adsense, which is very easy. It can also create a decent income if you get enough traffic.
Sometimes there can be a trick to finding affiliate programs that fit your niche, but they are there. It's best to build up your site, get the traffic rolling, and then seriously pound the Internet pavement and find a way to monetize. There is usually always an affiliate program that can be used.
Bottom line is, many people start with a given product, then just try to sell it. The problem with that is, if you don't have traffic, it's very hard to get any momentum and that can be very discouraging to people.
