Why not connect with your visitors on a personal level? Customers love to feel special, which shows when you leave comments on their sites, and email them personally (with the email not sounding like a template). It would help if the commenting/feedback form you have on your site asks them for their email and website, so you can contact each of them, with a message tailored just for them, of course. It's a bit old-world, old-fashioned. But something this memorable is exactly what's going to make you memorable to them.

The main one here is good content. I've seen badly designed sites that have good content and have a good amount of visitors. Look at craigslist for example. That's not the best designed website, but gets huge amounts of visitors daily.
