Sido one of the best ways to attract free traffic to your site is by participating in forums which are relevant to your niche and posting with a link to your site. You can also provide link to a section of your site in a post, however do make sure it is relevant to the discussion taking place and adds to the overall value of the thread you are posting in.

Never and I repeat never try to spam a forum, you will earn a ban and a bad reputation!

I advise you to give it time and add much content as you can. Then place your site in review forums, do some incentives for getting members and tell your friends to join your site. This look like running site and some of the visitors get joined. Just think as an outsider for your site and think why should you join the site? And you will get solution.

Offer promotional stuff and freebies, things that would usually cost the visitors but do not and make sure its only for members. That should make and lead to some more people joining up.

You can attract them by offering them some sort of things such as a gr8 feeling of community, you can offer them prizes, newletter with some kind of helpfull information, and mostly you must try to get a targeted traffic to your offer.

What about a sports blog like mine? I have been looking for ways to increase my traffic, the only thing that has worked is writing relevant content for what it going on, besides that nothing.

Submit your site to google and yahoo and other search engines and make sure u keep the site active with various offers as well as various competitions.
Add some freebies and i would suggest advertise over other websites or social networks.
I got my friends to help me get the website kicked off

What is your site all about by the way? Offering free stuff is an effective way to drive traffic to your site. Promote your site in high traffic forums whose niche is related to your site's niche.

Link building is one of the most important thing to improve your search engine rankings and in return attracting more visitors. Content is also another important thing that matters.

Try to focus on content and SEO part and leave rest on google

I exchanged links and banners with others to get traffic. It really worked, and I think it's a genious way of marketing something. You give away impressions, and in return, you get impressions. Simple and easy.

I also used a lot of these "manual-surfs" witch allows you to get hits to your site for visiting other sites. It's a bit complicated, but I think it worked.

Else it always helps to submit the site to the biggest search engines, link directories and such.

Another cool way is to make some small papers about your site and leave them at a bar or something
