Default Is traffic from social networking site worthless?

Recently there has been a new fad among webmasters, that is to game the social networking site such as digg, reddit etc. however the traffic I have received so far from these site (without gaming them) has converted poorly, with almost no revenue being generated from them (I have adsense on those site).

What do you guys think, how has this kind of traffic worked for you?

I have never tried it because right or wrong, I do not believe it can work. I personally do not know enough about to know if it is worthwhile.

I see all these people on forums paying to have their site dugg or stumbled BUT what I cannot understand is how these few people can make it worthwhile enough to get massive targetted traffic?

Maybe I need to do more reading on the subject.

Wesley this is some thing I have been wondering about, I have used these social networking site to try and promote my sites and as a general user. With things like digg, reddit and stumbleupon, you get in the habit of going through numerous website in a short period of time.

This is what has made me think, if people have a faster way of leaving your site and reaching some thing that is of interest to them, then why would they click on your ads or bookmark your site.

I have had good results from posting on digg. That's the only one that I have tried so far.

But when I first saw this thread, I thought it was going to be about advertising on myspace. THAT, IMO is worthless!

If you want some quick traffic then I have personally found reddit and stumbleupon to be the best.

There are many people on other forums that do stumble exchanges and things. I prefer to get my traffic from these types of sites naturally. Afterall, it doesn't convert much, so why bother with it when you can spend your time better elsewhere trying to get some better quality traffic. If you get some traffic from them, then that is just a little bonus I guess.

This type of traffic is much harder to convert than alot of other types of traffic, but still can be done. Even if it doesn't quite convert at first, you never know how many people from these networks are linking back to your site, bookmarking your site, etc.

That, to me , is the idea. They might not read much of your site at first, but the hope is to have them bookmark you and come back later. Then it is up to you to wow them with quality, original content. It never ceases to amaze me when people wonder why their site doesn't convert when they have a hodge podge f non-original articles that every other site in their niche is using.

Dont ever think like this, You are fooling yourself, networking sites such as hi5 and orkut has a great potential to attract more people to your site, which in turn earns you lot of bugs.

It's some worthy. Most of the site are on specific subjects. So they need better targeted visitors what we can term as real worthy traffic. So, that if they see some valuable content then they come back to site.
Sites like orkut has communities based on various subjects, you get that targeted visitors. But only advertise there when you have good content.

i dont think that it is worthless.

its a question of targeting.

are you targetting a general audience or looking for niche traffic.

for general traffic it is the same as refferal or regular traffic

It can be worthless if it is coming from a webmaster forum where you just exchange. If it is coming in a normal manner, it is not worthless then.

It's very useful traffic. The most best is Stumbleupon. It can really get you huge traffic.I last month got 1000+ visitors from Stumbleupon. Some traffic also turns into paying traffic.
Anyways traffic is traffic.

In terms of money, it does convert poorly, since all the experienced social networking users can spot the ads easily, and will not click them.
But the publicity is always welcome.

Wow, the traffic from social networking sites can be absolutely unbelievable. I use to use a social network (name withheld) mixed with a little blackhat to generate over $1,200 in income a day.

Yes, social networking site traffic can be well worth it.

I do nott believe in this kind of traffic as they do not bring targeted traffic. These are mainly people that are visiting your sites to see what it looks like and that's it...Not people that are genuinely interested in your sites.

I do believe traffics from social networking are not worthless. I have read a few books on building traffics from social networking.

The core content of the books that I have read are about writing a great content and building a relationship from social networking. Social networking is a free way of building free traffic.

Building a relationship can tap in to bringing thousands of traffic.
Example "A" has a relationship with "B". A writes good content. B reads it and refer it to his friends/network ( around 100). Out of that 100, there might be half of them refer A content to their network.
