Transferring domain name

I plan to transfer my domain names from one register host to another. What is the procedure in undertaking the transfer? Is the transfer expected to affect my sites' uptime?

Do you mean that you are changing registrars or you are changing hosts.

For registrars, there is no down time.

For hosts, there will be some downtime because the DNS must be changed to the new host and the DNS must propogate. It then depends on how often your ISP updates their cache.

So, some people see their site in about 24 hours while others take up to a week in some cases.

Just changing domain name registrar. Is there a leverage from the point of view of the original registrar to disallow the transfer? I need to transfer because of the high domain name renewal fee.
