Your domain name is currently one of the most highly valued pieces in the jigsaw of SEO. Just look at the google search results ie dentist and see how many of the page 1 results have dentist / dental in thir url.
This may all change next week or anytime soon but it is important right now

Great post crazedpanda - I understand you can set a target in Google Webmaster tools to set a geographic location if you want to target people from a certain country or, even better choose a local domain like .co.uk or .ca

Does it really matter if it is more than 7 characters? There are a lot of sites that have much longer domain names and are quite successful.

Don't make the mistake of attempting to retrofit your domain name to your business or website. thefreecountry.com did not originally start out with that name, and I encountered a huge hassle (and lost visitors) as a result of the URL changes. Don't make that mistake too.
If you need help getting that domain name, check out my other article on how to register a domain name. In that article, I also include a list of some registrars that you can use, distinguishing the well-established ones from the less established but cheap ones (so you have a wider choice, depending on what is important to you). The article can be found at (thesitewizard.com/archive/registerdomain.shtml)
thanks,

When choosing a domain name, it depends on what type of website you're going to create. In my opinion, if you are going to create some type of e-commerce website, i would suggest a keyword rich domain such as bluewidgets.com. If a .com is not available try .net. But if you're just creating a "normal" website that you're not trying to make money off of, than i would just pick a domain that sounds unique and easy to remember.

1.
Write down the name of your business. Remembering that short and sweet domain names are the easiest to remember, create a list of possible names using your business name (for example, smithauto.com, smauto.com, smitheys.com).
2
Create a list of services your business provides and a list of possible names from those services (for example, autorepair.com, fixcar.com, brokedown.com).
3
Use catchphrases from your brochure and other promotional materials to create additional possibilities.
4
For personal domain names, use your name, your pet's name, your hobbies, your surname or even your child's name.
5
Using Whois, you can type in your favorite picks and see if they're taken and by whom. If they are taken, keep trying with your alternate choices.
6
Use other organizational suffixes, such as .net or .org, if the .com name is taken. However, since users randomly searching for your site may be directed to the .com site first, .net and .org names are usually best for personal rather than business domain names.
7
If you're really set on using a domain name that has been taken, contact the owner of that domain name by checking the Administrative Contact section on the Whois site. Domain-name owners sometimes sell domain names they don't use.
