A backlinks is important whether it is from a edu site or gov and backlink related to your website niche type can help you to get you traffic as well.

Such sites are considered to be very vague and important for the search engine as such sites can not be fakes or scams.

Domain extension can not determine the weight of backlinks.
.edu domains are special if the website with such domains are delivering excellent quality content and living upto the the expectations of an authority website.

Google algorithms give more weightage to links coming from edu nad gov sites. Linkls from these sites are considered as a roof of authority from the sites.

.edu and .gov are official TLDs and usually there are high number of traffic and content on such website and people very much have trust on such domains so a link coming from such authoritative website is really a blessing on a website because such link has more importance than thousand of links from other common domains
