Is adding a directory to my site worth it?

I have a travel resource site with a forum; recently I have started asking members to give me links to their blogs and photo galleries if they want them to be linked from our links page.

This got me thinking, would it be worthwhile to add a directory instead of the links page where members could submit their links and I could approve them at a later stage? What do you guys think?

Yes. If you can manage reciprocal links that would do a lot good for your site. And as with every google update, there is a good chance of your directory also getting a high PR. Then You can really monetize it. Start with the FREE option.

Alpha I am not actually trying to monetize it, thinking of adding this as a value addition for my site and a way of saying thanks to my members.

Its a nice idea, but you should have an ability to manage it, Now it is depend upto you that you add directory or not.

I agree with the comment above that it all depends on the ability to manage the submission.If you have a directory you will be flooded with people who want to get their site listed and will not like the fact of having to wait for some time.

That sounds good. Giving free links from the link page will boost traffic and authority of your site.

I have heard that if Google finds too many links (especially similar ones) on one page then it will ignore it or give it very low priority in their rankings. Anyone heard of this?

Yes you can definitely go for having a directory and it would surely going to help you from other perspectives as well like you can have reciprocal links even without asking to anyone. Also you can use this directory for adsense as well when it got popular.
