None as of yet, but planning to start at least one or maybe two as I have some good domain names.

Any tips for a beginner?

First you should be faster to approve the approvals.
Second you should not concerntrates on its SEO because you can easily get 100 uniques in a day without any SEO.

Thanks
Jay

How would you get the traffic to your directory without SEO. Would you use forums and other directories so that you can make a listing to clearly say that "you can get your site listed for free in my directory?"

The thing with directories is that if you get your directory on a list of directories then it can become quite viral as I noticed with an article directory that I had. The downfall of it is that if you don't get traffic from the Search Engines then you may find that earning money from a directory where you allow completely free submissions becomes a little bit harder.

With search engine traffic I have found that the visitors are more likely to click on your ads rather than submit a site. Some of the search engine traffic is just looking for information and not to submit sites.

I have not started directory as yet as I do not think that there is a lot of money to be made in this nowadays.
Furthermore I am afraid that Search engines will begin to neglect directory links.
