Many directories give "followed" links back to your site. Those links hold value in telling the search engine algo to index your site, etc. Some directories also allow one or more links to internal pages which are hard to get.

Beware that many directories are a waste for seo purposes becasue they either "nofollow" the link or they point it back to their own dirctory, etc.

Very True, if the directories are dofollow and have high PR, it can help you to gain some PR, and traffic up to 1-2%. IMHO, i don't really care about the directories. I mainly concentrate on Link building and social sites.

We should also concentrate us for category because, if you will submit your site link to most suitable category then it will help you as backlinks from related pages.

Directory Submission is the basic step for any new website. If you submit your site in high PR directories and dofollow directories, you will definitely get good number of back links. Other ways for getting back links are blog posting, forum posting..

I think directory submissions once worked, but nowadays I think they have become less important when it comes to SEO. Yep, still aim to get your site listed on the most popular ones for some traffic and bit of SEO benefits, but spamming your link on over 1,000 directories that don't contain many other websites, I personally think it doesn't help your site much. I could be wrong mind you, but I aim to go for traffic.

Afterall if your site is good and people want to link to it, then they can resulting in natural backlinks from the many traffic you gain.

I think directory submission is good but link exchange will give a better result and it is easier to place your link on a page with PR. I can see most of the link page in directory sites have no PR!

directory submission is good for the backlink but now most of the people don't use it and concentrate on the quality backlink. it is much better to get the backlink from pr 5 site compare to thousand of PR 0 sites.

thanks

Directory Submission is the basic step for every new site. Dir. helps us to increase link popularity of our site. High PR Dir. is very use full in getting back link. The most important step is the category selection while submitting your site in directories.

because directory contain all categories & placing your site in wrong category cause big damage to your site.

Directory submission is still useful, not as it was in the past years, but also is a "to-do" when promoting a website.
