Tips in Choosing Directories to Submit to...

Quality is still the name of the game. Some pointers in selecting the directories to submit to:

High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal form directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.

Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed

What are your thoughts? Care to add more points

Hi I think you missed one. Directories that require payment and are not manually processed. This change has beenin place since 2007

Why? Paid directories tend to be well maintained. Some directories also use the payment from submissions to review the sites being submitted.

If you are looking for a new type of directory and your site generates RSS feeds then you may wish to conside oobdoo.com that accepts sites free of any charges.

thanks for your post, as tryUsOUt is already mentioned not all directories create equally in terms of search engine friendliness. you will find one that is both user and search engine friendly especially you have to sure somebody links got index before you submit your links to that directory.

yes... but you probably will look for directories that will index your links
by examine if someone else's link got index first.

Directory are good and easy back link source, but it takes a lot of time for approval and getting listed.

That is quite right but they are still important. There are several directories and some of them give very instant approval but that is different thing that they take some time in getting listed.

I agree and most directory sites have expiration so you need to renew.

Finding free directories to submit can be a challenge, especially since they take time to approve it. However, after a couple of weeks, you can immediately see that Google indexed your site and this is helpful for your site's PR.

I also think it is important to observe the directory for a while before u just submit to it. The traffic, the PR and backlinks are all the things that u should consider!

I heard that there are some site can fake PR, and u know the number on the google tool bar is not so accurate either.
