Compaq Presario Notebook: Headphones not working

I have been using Compaq Presario Notebook for a long time and everything was working fine until last weekend. For some reason my headphones stopped working, so I purchased new headphones, but they didn't work either. I went to control panel and checked out the sound option, it said that my headphones were not plugged in the jack even though they were. Can't figure out the reason behind this problem. Can anyone help me to fix it?
