Default Illegal copy of XP?

I'm pretty certain my copy of XP and the key code is genuine but when I try to validate it on the microsoft website (I was trying to download ie7) it keeps saying it can't validate my copy of windows. The troubleshooting info on the ms site didn't solve my issue. Assuming my copy of xp is 100% authentic, what could be the problem?

I'm no expert at this, but I do know that if you have a license that can only be used for one machine, then maybe your XP could already be license for 1 computer. If it is then I think you have to end the license for that computer before you can put it onto the other computer.

I only used that one COA on 1 computer. That's okay, I found a utility download that should fix the problem. Microsoft had issues with some key verifications and it could be that my key got mixed up and was added to their invalid key database.

Yeah, that is possible. I bought the copy off of eBay. The seller was pretty reputable...at the time, at least. I bought it a couple of years ago and I was trying to look for the sellers name in my feedback history but I couldn't find it. Oh well, anyway the problem is fixed...I just had to purchase another COA (a legal one) which is kind of a bummer.

It wasn't just to dl IE7. I have Firefox on my pc but I wanted to keep it legal so that if I ever need to redo the HD, I'll have no issues.

I dont think that your copy is genuine or someone might have copied your XP CD and loaded XP on a second computer then only this is possible. Its better that you go and confirm the same with the person who sold you this XP copy.

Yes. I agree with you ashwin. Its really hard to get that genuince. But many people manage to make that copy like a genuine one. I also can do that. hehe, but i only teach for several people only and its especially for my closed friends only.

Please don't discuss anything illegal on these forums. Making fake copies of XP is illegal.

Thanks!
