If the hard disk is totally damaged then its of no use. And if its ok then you can use any Data Recovery software to recover the data.

Yeah they are right, additional information about the current status of your HD would be a great help. If it's already totally damaged then there is no means for you to recover your files.

See dear , there are 2 types of damages- physical and Logical. If its a logical failure then a software like Stellar Phoenix Windows Data recovery software, can resolve your problem. If its a Physical damage due to water , dust, heat etc. then U maust go for some data recovery specialists . Google for "hard drive recovery " and try the top players of this field.

If you lost your important files. You could try Recuva this is a freeware utility for Windows. You could also restore from your windows backup or restore from a previous version. This is the copy of files and folders that are automatically saved by windows as a part of your systems restore point, this is also referred to as shadow copies.
You can, if the hard disk is still working.

You can retrieve your data after formatting hard-disk but you can't retrieve once it has been damaged.

Backup and restoring data from your computer is an essential part of computing. It can be done using the backup wizard in your system by following the instructions. Restoring data from backup is also similar to taking a back up.
You can use any Data Recovery software to recover the data from hard disk.
