yeah it is good to have basic knowledge of PHP as most of the popular CMS are based on open source which can be easily integrated with use of PHP. If you are new at programming, prefer to study wordpress which wouldn't require to have deep level knowledge of PHP.

In case of Drupal, Joomla and many other popular CMS's, the underlying technology is PHP. Hence learning PHP basics would be the first step if you are planning to learn one of those.

its true that PHP is underlying technology for all plate forms but you may get help from any professional one time and after that you can handle it because CMS is user friendly and any one can handle it very easily.

According to me, PHP is the best and well famous programming language for free open source. And almost many developers want PHP to use with CMS platforms.

yes, The simpler a CMS is to understand, the less it can do and the more you will need PHP to implement its function. For a CMS to not need you to know PHP to be able to use it to do anything that you will ever need, the CMS will be way more complicated than PHP to understand.

PHP is the basic platform on which wordpress and other CMS are built. So basically if you want to go in deep you have to study PHP and related coding.

The easier a CMS is to learn, the less it can do and the more you will need PHP to extend its functionality. For a CMS to not need you to know PHP to be able to use it to do anything that you will ever require, the CMS will be way more complex than PHP to learn.
