You can use WP and there is a plugin for article directories. It comes with a basic layout too. Search for "articless plugin"..

For beginners, I would suggest Wordpress, easy to use & lots of plug-ins for SEO. Drupal & Joomla is good for experienced users and the best thing about them is their security.

I agree with candiid. Beginners have easier access to getting familiar with wordpress. But I think Joomal is more popular.

I am using it as it is too easy but it seems to lag in SEO, links that use to show up in site maps with straight html dont get found in Joompla

Joomla is great - I would suggest you turn on all the search engine friendly options, I have never had any problems with Joomla sites in the SERPS - I would not blame Joomla for this it is probably the way the site is configured or how the SEO work has been completed.

Default wordpress or joomla

Wordpress and Joomla is best for article sites, both offer flexibility and wide support online.

And lots of plugins, modules and components for free.
