I think that Joomla will win this fight, because ecommerce now is at the driver's seat and will only grow. but of cource first of all it depends on the subjects of a site and your demands and wishes.

WordPress is the best. It is great for blogging sites as well as for the e-commerce website. Due to its huge variety of pluggins, you will not need to have programming knowledge to configure what you want to do. Its interface is very user-friendly and even if you are new to it, its very easy to learn.

most biz choose wordpress
but both wordpress and joomla are standard, so don't worry about the future of it
if u are tech savvy, joomla would be cool
if u are new to making website, wordpress is the choice
i like wordpress. it can do what joomla can do too
but Wordpress is a blog software
Joomla is Content Management System

I prefer for the Joomla.* Because, it is a best CMS for designers and administrators. They design a great looking website and it is really easy it use. Also, Joomla includes number of features and many more features are constantly improving from the past 3 years.* However, the WordPres will not provide suitable workspace. Because, when the developers try to do some modifications, the whole system will be crashed. Hence, I prefer for the Joomla website.*

You can't really answer the question without knowing what your customer wants to do with it.
I've used Wordpress to build 3 sites. Very quick to get a site up and running. Once it's live, it's easy and intuitive to update as well.
Joomla is much more powerful, but also a lot harder to get started with. I didn't think it was very intuitive at first, but you appreciate the many options as you get more advanced.
