Affiliate marketing is the term used to describe a revenue-sharing plan where an online automated marketing program lets Webmasters place an advertiser's banner ads or buttons on their own Web site. Webmasters will receive a referral fee or commission from conversions when a customer has clicked the affiliate link and performs the desired action, such as make a purchase or opt-in for downloads or newsletters on the advertiser's site. Advertisers invest in affiliate programs for lead generation, and, of course, sales.
Not all affiliate plans work in the same way or pay the same rates. Some enable you to place text or image hyperlinks to products or a Web site, others allow you to set up a shopping or store page that offers products related to the content of your Web site, and others require you to simply place general advertising banners or buttons.

The payouts for Webmasters also varies, but in the most common forms the affiliate is paid per click, each time a person clicks the ad (pay-per-click) or you may be paid a commission when a sale is made (pay-per-sale) or you might be paid by lead (pay-per-lead).

That's absolutely correct. Principally, Affiliate marketing works on following two modules:

CPC / PPC: It stands for Cost per Click / Pay per Click. You pay to webmasters when there is a click on your ad.

PPL: It is pay per lead. This is the most popular option in affiliate marketing. You only pay to webmasters when there is a sale or lead for you.

You can earn money or get leads in any form using affiliate marketing. For example, we are an IT consulting company offering end-to-end IT services. We have designed a partner program (A kind of affiliate program). We look for those people/companies who can provide us IT leads/sales and in return when their referral turns into a sale/lead for us then we pay them on PPL basis. Paying per referral may varies. That's how our partner program works.

Affiliate marketing is a business which provides the profit at very high margin and could be done from any where even from your home also. In affiliate marketing, you the affiliate has to promote the product of a particular website. For example, the forex affiliate will promote the forex affiliate program through their website and their aim will be to increase the traffic of the website.

Affiliate marketing is always a confusing word for many newbies, they think that affiliate marketing needs money to join but in reality its not, you can do affiliate marketing without buying products or paying any joining fees!

That is really a big concept that how an affiliate market works. Affiliate market is a web based marketing business in which the affiliates has to promote the affiliate programs through the websites to attract the traffic on their site as well as they have to promote their own website also.
