One more simple tip is: Always make an effort to advertise for your affiliate programs by writing articles, writing reviews on products from your affiliated merchants, or simply using your merchant's website name. This makes your product more reliable.

Thanks for the wonderful information here. Following are the best steps in my opinion for Affiliate Marketing Success:
* Drive traffic to your blog / site
* Build up a subscriber list among your audience
* Create a Squeeze / Capture Page (where you audience can enter their details and subscribe to your mailing list)
* Try to drive traffic to your Squeeze Page

Yep, I agree that there should always be a plan before starting. I am really amazed by how many people do 1 or 2 of the things, but can't do the other things.
For example, someone makes a site, but doesn't know how to monetize it or someone makes a site and doesn't know how to get traffic to it, etc.
If you don't know how to monetize a site, get traffic to it or even build it, then it's a lot harder to succeed in what your aiming to do online.

A business plan is critical if you are serious- it helps to organize how you will make money, market your services, etc.

I'll start my list with "the right mindset". Others which have been mentioned here is equally important, but if you don't start with the right mindset its going to be a constant uphill ride.
For example, if you think "what can I promote?" than you most probably will be lost in uncertainty, and finally will go with what most people are promoting, or what the clickbank gravity are and such, which in the end will make you work extra hard against the competitions.
But if you have the mindset of "to who can I promote", it will be much easier coz you'll first find out what people want and then find the thing/product that suit their need.
