I think its a good investment if you can afford it. Google has stated in the past that having a link to Yahoo and ODP/DMoz is a good thing, however I believe they removed that information from their guidelines recently. If you can't afford the yearly cost then look into other lower cost directories that are human edited and have some value, BOTW and JoeAnt I believe are still helpful. Yahoo and directories are only one of many different ways to build links.
