I think the most effective seo technique is "Keyword Research".
Popular and high traffic keywords are mostly dominated by seo experts. It might take years to achieve what they have done and domain names which have keywords in have been bought. My minor success in seo mainly depends on the keyword research I did.
After years of doing SEO, I've been able to dig out high traffic keywords with low competition and extremely easy to rank for. Although my link building ability is not as strong as most seo experts, I get a good amount of traffic.
