I would also say to find a niche that hasn't already been exploited to Hell and back. It amazes me that newbies will try to emulate the sites that are already popular, like celebrity sites, which have been saturated to the point of no return. Find a smaller niche that you are interested in, do a Google search for it, and if there aren't already 10 billion pages on it you are on to something. Chances are others are also searching for this and want quality content on it.
