Default Keyword research

The first part of your research is to find out if the keywords you're targeting even get searched for. It makes no sense getting into a campaign with the keyword "snow in the Desert" if nobody is searching for that.

You will end up wasting time. So, the first thing you will need to do is get your keyword tool for each keyword that wish to target and note down the number of monthly searches for that phrase.

Then you will have to check out/research on the costs of the keywords. Finding keywords that cost less is the key OR find a product that pays more commission.
