I use Twitter heavily and have around 4600 followers to date. I don't find it useful for generating direct website traffic. There is too much marketing going on Twitter for anyone to notice your tweets typically. The approach I am taking with Twitter is to constantly grow my following and therefore my Twitter page's PR. In about 7 months I have taken it from PR0 to PR5. Now when I backlink to my site I am gaining powerful links that are showing up in my GWT. I realize they are no follow links but I feel that they are still high valued links.
