There is a give and take process in email marketing and especially when it is about building the email marketing lists. It is human nature and a sign of all good citizens that when someone is providing us with something, we should return them with a favor as well. When you provide your potential customers or clients with valuable things such as important info, various incentives, free sites, solutions to their problems, etc; you are doing them a favor and this is the time when they would not back off providing you with something either.
If a marketer is well seasoned, then he or she would know exactly how to build an effective email marketing list that means having an excellent layout for the readers and visitors. There would be a landing page packed from info and other valuable stuff; they would love to leave their names and email addresses over their and anything else you might feel necessary to have such as a contact number or address. Once they have provided you with this info, they will immediately receive a free bonus of some kind like a coupon etc.
I just talked about a seasoned marketer so do not think that capturing that much info would be your choice as well. You might be thinking that since they are already on your landing page leaving their emails and names so why not ask for more things like address, phone number, income, age, marital status, etc? The reason you cannot ask for all such info is because if you do so, they will simply leave. Today everyone feels risky when sharing information with anyone he or she does not really know. If you ask an expert of email marketing; he or she would strongly advice you not to go further then name and email.
When a customer provides you with email and name, he trusts you and that trust cannot be broken at any cost. You should not even think about giving out any contact info of anyone to anyone. Google would simply shut you down once people report you as a spammer because you were selling lists or promoting other people's lists as well through the contacts you gathered. You should find this as an opportunity of building a relationship with the customer and doing some great business in the future with them.
