SEO Copywriting Facts, Tips and Issues

What is SEO Copywriting?

SEO Copywriting is the technique of writing a web page's content in such a way that it will rank highly in search engines for specific keywords. Thus SEO Copywriting falls under the category of Search Engine Optimization Techniques, of which there are many. It is also On-Page Optimization since the work is done on the web page itself (rather than out of it, as in link-building).

What do you do in SEO Copywriting?

First, you select a web page to do SEO copywriting on. Then you choose one or two keywords or key phrases. Finally you write the content with the keywords or key phrases strategically placed in it.

Any tips for good SEO Copywriting?

Your SEO Copywriting must be neither too long nor too short. This is because the keyword density, or ratio of keywords relative to the amount of text in the page, influences its page ranking. Normally, a page should have between 200-400 words only. Another reason for this is most surfers do not like to read large bodies of text. They won't read what you write if it's too long.

You must not include too many keywords or key phrases in one page. That would hurt your chances of ranking high for any of them. If you have many key terms that you want to target, devote separate pages to each one (or two at most).

Your SEO Copywriting must use the technical language of your industry. If you write about Blackjack, you must use such Blackjack jargon as "hit," "double down" and "insurance." These are the keywords and phrases that your target audience are likely to use, unless of course you are targeting beginners to said card game.

Your SEO Copywriting must sound natural. If you repeat a keyword too often, or if you enumerate a bunch of obvious keywords, you risk not only annoying people, but being penalized by Google.

Does SEO Copywriting work?

Yes, SEO Copywriting does work. But it's not a miracle worker. SEO Copywriting alone won't get you to the top page ranking. You would still need other SEO techniques such as inbound or back links to your web site from top ranking web sites.

Further, anyone can do SEO Copywriting or have it done for them. That includes your competitors. And that means if you do get the top page ranking, competitors could simply duplicate and outdo your SEO Copywriting; then they would overtake you in page ranking.

SEO Copywriting works easily if you are targeting keywords that do not have many web sites vying strongly for them. (You can use the Google AdWords Tool and other similar keyword tools to find that out.) Your keywords must be ones that people look for yet are not optimized for too many other pages. Just try to optimize your web page for words like "sex" or "news" if you don't believe us. :)

One problem of SEO Copywriting is it can degrade the quality of your writing. If you care about your writing style, you won't be happy with SEO techniques like Copywriting because you will be forced to use the same words instead of synonyms over and over.

Conclusion

SEO Copywriting is an important SEO tool. However you mustn't think that this technique alone would put you on top of search engine results. To do so would lead to disappointment and frustration.
