Managed Hosting Service: Description

© AffiliateSeeking - This article is not allowed to be re-published but can be linked to.

A managed hosting service is a type of web hosting wherein a single physical server is leased out to a single client who is then entitled to use the entire server. This type of service is also called dedicated hosting service or dedicated server. A managed hosting service is pretty much the exact opposite of shared hosting service.

Unlike shared hosting where several clients are hosted on a single physical server, managed hosting is a form of web hosting wherein a single client is provided with the exclusive use of the server. This gives managed hosting an unparalleled degree of flexibility when compared to other web hosting types.

Another feature that this type of hosting can offer to it's clients is that the administration of the server is usually handled by the service provider, thereby freeing the users from this responsibility.

A high degree of security is another strong point of a managed hosting service. Providers of this type of hosting take the security of their services very seriously. Strong security measures are put in place to prevent the loss of data or damage to the data stored on their servers.

Numerous programs that counter the threat of harmful problems are frequently put into place by the service providers. Since there are several types of operating systems that are used by web hosting servers, there are of course different software programs that will function on the operating system being used.

Windows and Linux are the two most commonly used operating systems and each OS employs different software programs for the security of the servers. Some common examples of these programs used on Linux managed hosting servers are FIN Scans, XMAS Scans, UDP Scan and Port Sentry. A Windows dedicated server on the other hand, employs the Trend Micro system.

An additional fixed monthly fee is often billed to clients of managed hosting servers so that particular software packages can be included on the service. These software packages include helpful applications for the use of the clients and service providers.

For example, Microsoft offers several of it's products to service providers and users through a program that has a monthly fee. This is called the SPLA or the Service Provider License Agreement. This software bundle includes many software programs that are used on web hosting services.

There is an abundance of useful features and additional services that are available to managed hosting servers. Some of these are provided free to clients, although most come at a cost.
