Webmaster Content Help

Once a webmaster has opened a web site account, it's time to work on the site's content. What you put in your site depends on what it is for, so only a few general tips can be given here.

- First is the home page, named either index.htm or index.html. Make sure it functions as the home page like it is meant to, and not "display only." Notice how a Flash introduction often includes the option "skip Flash intro"? That's because it's not needed. Avoid this. Put information up-front in all your web pages. The index page should include basic info on what your site is about, the latest news, and menus for other parts of your site.

NOTE: Do NOT make your introductory remarks too long. GET TO THE POINT.

- A Frequently Asked Questions page is a staple feature of a good web site. Your webmaster content planning should provide for one. The FAQ is the first place you want your visitors to go. Preferably, it should be in a single web page. Some webmasters put the FAQ contents in separate pages and the visitor has to load each one separately. Make your FAQ only a page long. Break it into 2-3 pages only if they are really long. Link to it from every web page in your site.

- About Us. Another requisite of good webmaster content. Tell your visitors who you are. Give full names of the person or people running your site, and a history of your company/organization. Granted, most people won't care about this. But it establishes your credentials for those seriously interested in your business.

- Site Map. If your site is rather large and graphics take forever to load, be sure to include a site map.

- Terms of Use. Again, nobody reads this. But it's smart to make it a part of your webmaster content design. You don't want t get into trouble or dispute later on. So leave no doubt about your site, and what guarantees you do and do not provide to your visitors/users.

- Free Stuff. Most popular webmaster content of all. You should offer some unpaid service to your visitors. For example, if your web site is an online store that sells silverware, post quality articles about the types of silverware, how to buy, how to take care of them and so on. This is good for business too since it tells your visitors you know your stuff.

- Awards, News Articles & Reviews. Boast away with your credentials. It doesn't matter if the award-giving body is a never-heard. People will think it's something even if it isn't! Smart webmaster content is there to sell you after all.

- Main content. Make your web site sound unique. Whatever you have over the competition, put it up-front in your web site's content. Impress your visitors by talking about your great reputation and track record. As a webmaster, stress the safety and security your web site offers (secure pages, etc.). Above all, give visitors what they want ASAP.

- Contact Us. No matter how much webmaster content you put, there's bound to be unanswered questions there. Use a submission form for feedback and inquiries. This is better than a plain e-mail address. It also protects you against spam.

These few webmaster content guidelines should be adhered to. The more predictable your site is, the easier it is to navigate. Remember: Accessible, quality information is the heart of good webmaster content.
