The World Wide Web, Internet or Web as we all know it today, caters to a wide variety of people that comes from all over the globe. There are kids looking for school things, teens for games, adults for things to buy, elders for reading purposes, and a lot more.
The characteristics of people who are online everyday can be as much as the sand in a great cool beach. So, it is very important that the web design should address and fit the needs of most, if not all, of these users. Therefore, the need for user-friendly web design arises.
Good web design is characterized by several things. We'll start off with the search engines that are placed with the web design. Some kids do not know how to spell Mississippi perfectly and might want to find out more about this. They might type in Misisipi and the search engine would turn out zero results. A bit frustrating for the children not to find out what they are looking for. This is because the search engines are not crafted in such a way that it will allow for mistakes in spelling, plurals, or hyphens. A good web design will take into consideration putting a search engine that accommodates common errors of users.
Next, we deal with fonts. They matter a lot because it is what makes the appearance of the text more lively or dull. Don't place a page full of text, worse with a justified position that appears as if they are reading a page full of news. Place emphasis on the important things by highlighting, placing them in bold characters, or in italic ones. Most often than not, web users would just scan through the important details and then leave if they don't find any. If your best ideas are squeezed in with the ordinary details, you might lose the chance to give your web its purpose. Also, place pictures to break the monotony of texts. But keep their quantity at a moderate level.
There are also problems with navigation. Users assume that every text in the site that is underlined will lead them to more details and open up new tabs or windows. So, underline only links and not ordinary plain text. Also, avoid using PDF files for viewing because the problems arise when the user is not familiar with using the PDF functions or they don't have any software for PDF reading.
A good web design is not simply about the physical appearance of the website. It should also include in its planning the usability of the website and how it fits the needs of the users. After all, the best-looking website would be nothing if no one could use it.
